I always wanted to join the military and serve my country. I know I couldn’t join the military due to my disability. I was diagnosed with cerebral palsy at an early age, which refines me to a wheelchair, and I am non — vertebral. My father was in the United States Navy, and we lived in Norfolk, Virginia for a few years. I would always look up and watch the military helicopters fly by. My dad was part of the gator navy, he would take me on the navy ships. After I graduated from community college with my associate’s degree in web technology, I decided to join the Civil Air Patrol so I could help them maintain their website. I know I couldn’t jump out from helicopters and planes. I asked the officer who oversaw Technology, and information for the Civil Air Patrol if I could help maintain the wing’s website. I was assigned to enter data whenever my unit needs it. That frustrated me that they let me work on the website as I requested. They underestimate me because I was in a wheelchair. I entered data for a few years; I decided to join the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary. My job in the auxiliary was the Flotilla Staff Officer Diversity where I wrote monthly articles about figures from different ethnic groups. For example, February is black history month, and I wrote about Alex Haley, the first African — American who obtained a Journalism rating in the United States Coast. My flotilla commander cited me with the Auxiliary Achievement Medal.
