United States Coast Guard Auxiliary played a vital role in World War 2!
The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary is a civilian component of the United States Coast Guard. Originally, the Coast Guard was designed to promote boating safety since United States have seen an increase in boating recreation. In 1939, there 300,000 personal watercraft in the U.S Waterways. The Coast Guard received 14,000 calls but only was able to respond to 8.600 calls. The Coast Guard needed an auxiliary force to assist with these calls and promote boating safety. In 1941, the United States Coast Guard Reverse and Coast Guard Auxiliary was transferred from the United States Treasury Department to the United States Department of the Navy and in 1942 the auxiliary was authorized to wear the military uniform. During World War 2, they patrolled the water for submarines and rescued survivors from sunken ships. The auxiliary was order to train the active members of the United States Coast Guard since World War II was going on. Auxiliary members were active officers and the war they returned to their normal duties in the auxiliary. Many members were responsible for recruiting members into Coast Guard. Many members quipped their boats with machine guns to defense themselves against German U — boats. The auxiliary was tasked with anti submarine patrol butt the auxiliary never have sunken a submarine.
